What is cosmetic dentistry?

The simplest possible definition

Simply put, cosmetic dentistry refers to dental procedures that are designed to give your teeth a more aesthetically pleasing look based on modern beauty standards. These treatments typically include teeth straightening, whitening, veneers, bonding, or shaping (also known as shaving). EBE0FF

Is cosmetic dentistry always about looks?

Actually, it isn’t. Whilst whitening and veneers are purely about looks, teeth straightening can sometimes be health related. This is because teeth that are not well aligned can pose a risk to the integrity of the tooth and even affect your digestion, because poor misalignment means difficulty chewing food.

Cosmetic Dentistry Treatments

Composite Bonding

Cosmetic bonding is the process of applying a layer of tooth-coloured material over the teeth to change their shape or appearance.

This works best for teeth that have lost their colour (because of root canal, for example) or for teeth that are weirdly shaped in comparison to the rest.

Composite bonding is suitable ONLY when the change that needs making is minor.

Once done, it needs maintaining yearly, but is one of the most inexpensive cosmetic procedures.

Teeth Whitening

In it’s essence, teeth whitening is the process of gently bleaching your teeth to remove any external and even internal staines.

You must be aware that teeth whitening won’t change the genetic colouring of your teeth – it will only remove damage by tea, coffee, and other colouring that was accumulated over time.

Teeth whitening methods:

  • In chair: the whitening is done in the dentist office. Typical cost is £200 and over, but results are instant and very visible.
  • At home: costs can be as low as £20, but it takes time and dedication until you see any results.

Teeth Straightening

Teeth straightening is the process of aligning your teeth and bite for optimal looks and performance, by using either attachments and wires or aligners.

Teeth straightening can take anything between 6 months and 4 years (depending on complexity) and a realistic starting price is £2000 for the mildest of cases (only about 5% of cases).

95% of the people will be a mid-complexity cases and total cost of treatment will be approximately £3500-£4000.

Dental veneers

Getting dental veneers is the process of having a thin layer of dental material applied over your original teeth to achieve a uniform, Hollywood-style smile.

Must knows:

  • The procedure requires that your original teeth are shaved significantly.
  • Composite veneers are cheaper than ceramic veneers and there’s less original tooth removal.
  • They need to be maintained for life… And are expensive
  • You can have a single veneer done if only one tooth needs it
  • Don’t ever take this decision lightly – it’s irreversible!

Teeth Shaping

Teeth shaping (also known as teeth contouring or re-contouring) is the process of filling down (shaving) your teeth using dental tools (yes, the scary buzzing ones).

Teeth shaping is painless, requires no anaesthesia, and typically takes only a few minutes.

Must know:

  • When done correctly, teeth shaping doesn’t pose a risk to the health of your teeth
  • Teeth shaping is used for very, very minor cosmetic issues (1-2mm at the most.
  • Teeth shaving is a final-touch type of procedure.
